I've been thinking a lot about weight lately. In my business I often work with clients who are struggling with weight - body weight, physical weight, in other words - poundage! Some want to gain but by far most want to GET RID OF IT! Guiding clients in making better food choices can certainly be life changing for them, but often the truly sustainable effects come when they release the mental weight they may be carrying. Typically, here is where the magic lies! As with physically lifting a material object, what we hold on to weighs us down. When we are willing to let go, we become light and free. My nature has always been quite light and free spirited but as a fairly young adult I started accumulating "stuff" and getting somewhat "established" (like we are "supposed to"?). Add prematurely "inheriting" a lot of other people's "stuff" + my large dose of sentiment, and suddenly I was feeling quite BOGGED down by this "attachment" to THINGS! Even if these material possessions were not in my sight, I held them in my mind - items to sort through such as photos, paperwork, clothes, rooms to clean! The perfect recipe for feeling heavy and scattered. All this I knew was not in line with my freebird, travel loving spirit! I would think, "how could I move now? How could I leave my well established comfort? This lack of "free will" bothered me even more! So these last several years I went to work on this "weight". It took courage and A LOT of decision making for this sentimental fool. Since then I've done SO much simplifying. I told my sister at times I feel like I am living my life backwards! I now live in a small place and don't have a car! (Well, it is NYC.) Someday, I will accumulate "more" again (it's not that I don't love comfort and luxury!), but the approach will be much different with all this clarity and mental space I've created. My living space may be small but my mental space is practically wide open! What mental weight do you carry? My extra weight was material things. For some it could be past hurts, grudges, unfinished business, etc... I encourage you to find a way to drop some of these pounds! Less actually is MORE and you will be on your way to to feeling light and in turn you can shine that "light" of yours more brightly!
